Stop #1 on the JerkSwag American Road Trip:
Slaughter Beach, Delaware
Founded in 1691, the true story behind the naming of Slaughter Beach is a debate that, to this day, no one really cares about.
Is it named for a fabled meeting between early settlers who invited the indigenous people of the region to a meeting on the beach to commune with "God," the settlers' large and loaded cannon?
Or is the moniker in remembrance of the hundreds of horseshoe crabs who are tossed along the shore to fester and rot in the summer sun?
Realistically, it was probably named after some random family settlers, John and Mary Slaughter and their children Horace, Betsy Ann, Jedediah, and John Slaughter Junior.
(Horace would eventually grow up to load the beach conference cannons.)
